Selling Pallets – How Pallet Buy-Back Works

Selling used or surplus pallets is a great way to reduce excess stock in your warehouse while also earning money from it. The pallet buy-back process is simple, but a number of factors affect the purchase price and terms.
Below we explain how selling pallets works and what to look out for.
1. Which pallets can be sold?
Most buyers accept the following types:
EUR pallets (EPAL, 1200x800 mm) – the most sought-after and most valuable type.
One-way pallets – at a lower price, but some buyers accept them.
Special pallets (e.g. CP pallets, plastic pallets) – can be sold depending on the buyer’s requirements.
2. The condition and quality of the pallets determine the price
Buyers grade pallets according to quality categories:
Grade 1 (as new, with minimal wear) – can be sold at the highest price.
Grade 2 (used, but in stable condition) – bought at a lower price.
Damaged or broken pallets – some buyers may purchase them at a lower price for repair.
3. How does pallet buy-back work?
Contacting the buyer – It is worth enquiring in advance and requesting a quote.
Checking the condition of the pallets – The buyer inspects the quality of the pallets on collection.
Setting the price – Based on quantity, condition and market demand.
Arranging transport – Some buyers collect the pallets; in other cases the seller has to arrange delivery.
Payment – Settlement is made in cash or by bank transfer.
4. How can you get a better purchase price?
Sell your pallets in larger quantities, as you may receive volume discounts.
Clean and sort your pallets, as pallets in better condition can fetch a higher price.
Look for a local buyer to reduce transport costs.
Check whether the pallet is heat-treated (in accordance with the ISPM 15 standard), as these usually fetch more.
5. Delivery or drop-off at the site?
The seller can deliver the pallets to the buyer’s site, or in some cases the buyer will collect them. For larger quantities, it is worth looking for a partner who also provides transport.
